Jump Ropes Make Great Boxers

Walk into any boxing gym and you will almost certainly hear the rhythmic slap of a jump rope hitting the floor. Jumping rope is an ideal way to improve stamina and cardiovascular health, and is a key element in boxing training. Boxers use the rope to improve footwork, agility, coordination and quickness.

A jump rope for boxing is usually between 8 and 10 feet in length, which should be fine for most adults. To measure the best length for you, place one foot in the center of the rope and lift the ends. The rope should come up to your armpits. If it is too long, cut a bit off, but use caution. Only take an inch off at a time and then re-measure.

Practice rope jumping on a resilient, giving surface. Boxers will often jump in the ring itself rather than on the concrete floor of their gym. Wear well padded cross trainers to absorb the shock. Boxing shoes don't provide the cushion needed to protect the feet.
